History
St John Newland Church
The church of St John Newland was first built at a cost of £1650. It comprised a simple box shape including a gallery and was consecrated in 1833.
The parish
From Daughter Church to Parish
It was then a daughter church of St Mary‘s Cottingham. The present vicarage was built in 1863. By 1869 it became a parish in its own right.
Education and expansion
Joseph Malet Lambert and the New School
Joseph Malet Lambert was vicar from 1881 to 1912. In his time the building was more than doubled in size with a chancel and a north aisle added, the nave extended and a baptistry and porches provided. He was keenly interested in education and was deputy chairman of Hull Education Committee, Chairman of the Higher Education Committee and the first chairman of the Governing Council of Hull University College. He was also instrumental in the building of a new school in 1905 replacing the previous 1865 building. The present school was built in 1962 on a site on Beresford Avenue and subsequently much expanded.
