Hall Road
The section of Hall Road that crosses Barmston Drain was originally a straight lane leading through countryside from Beverley [High] Road to Cottingham, where it joined Middledyke Lane. It was originally called North Carr Lane, referring to the wet, boggy land it passed through, or Cold Harbour Lane, named after Cold Harbour Farm, which stood to northwest of the original Cold Harbour Bridge across Barmston Drain. The farm was demolished in 1966.
At the request of a developer, Orchard Parks Ltd, it was re-named Orchard Park Road in 1935. As the need for new housing continued in the city, construction of the Orchard Park Estate to the west of Barmston Drain was begun in 1963 and mostly completed by 1969.
The estate was built as four ‘villages’ one at a time, as the estate grew – The Courts, The Danes, The Shaws and The Thorpes, each village was supposed to have its own school, shops and pub. Most of the housing was low rise and each ‘village’ has its own style of housing, but there were also 11 tower blocks across the estate that were the tallest residential buildings in Hull. In 2002, the first 3 of these tower blocks was demolished, with the remaining 7 being demolished by 2015.
